Radio Svoboda Ukraine or Ukrainian Service – Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty began broadcasting in 1954 from Munich. The editorial staff of the radio station consisted of figures from the Ukrainian emigration. Broadcasting of Radio Liberty on short waves was subject to total jamming in the USSR. The correspondent bureau in Kyiv was created in 1989.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is funded by the US Congress, but the US government is prohibited from interfering in editorial policy. Radio Svoboda Ukraine produces uncensored news and promotes the values of democracy.
